In episode 183 of This Week In Space, Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik join Mike Wall to discuss NASA’s efforts to beat the Chinese to a human landing on the moon.
Lander, lander, who has the lander? Last week, Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy announced that the agency would reopen the contract for the Artemis III lunar lander, which had previously been leased to SpaceX to be fulfilled by their Starship Human Landing System. Unfortunately, that effort is far behind schedule, and the Trump administration has made landing astronauts on the moon before China does a national priority.
With multiple refueling and landing tests required, there are concerns that SpaceX may not be able to fulfill its promise before China’s announced 2030 landing date. Elon Musk responded to the announcement with a signature approach, using phrasing like “Sean Dummy” and saying he has a double-digit IQ.
